"Compatible Perennials for the Lily Aficionado"
Speaker Mike Heger, Ambergate Gardens

Even though you are an avid fan of lilies, you probably enjoy a wide range of other perennials as well.  Mike’s presentation will highlight some of his favorite perennials that combine well with lilies. We will explore some likely companions for early blooming lilies like Martagons, perennials that add spark at peak lily season and plants that complement late season lilies like Orientals and Orienpets. Perennials that add interest to the garden prior to and after lily blooming season will also be touched on. You are certain to leave this session with new ideas for the upcoming growing season!

Michael L. Heger, along with his wife Jean, owns Ambergate Gardens located near Chaska, MN. Though a foreign language major in college, his love of the outdoors brought him into 15+ years of employment with the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Ambergate Gardens was started in 1985 while he was still employed at the Arboretum. In 1988, it became a full time business for Mike and Jean. Ambergate Gardens is a retail mail order/walk-in business devoted entirely to herbaceous perennial flowers. It also offers a line of wholesale containerized perennials to local designers and landscapers.

Mike is a past president of the North Star Lily Society and is active in numerous plant societies and trade organizations related to perennial flowers. He has lectured on a wide variety of gardening topics throughout the northern tier of states. Mike is also the author of “Perennials A to Z”, a series of articles that were originally published in Minnesota Horticulturist and coauthor of “Growing Perennials in Cold Climates”. A revised edition of this highly regarded book, written specifically for the colder regions of this country, is being released in Spring of 2011.

- How to Protect Your Lilies

Fall is the optimum time to plant lilies and this sale will offer a special collection of shade-loving martagon lilies along with favorites from our Summer Lily Show Popularity Poll and some of the latest "interdivisional" lilies like Orienpets and LA hybrids and traditional Asiatic and Trumpet favorites. With interest growing in martagon lilies and knowing that they can be a higher investment in garden color we are holding a free educational event on how to protect your lilies. One way is to prevent underground destruction by mice and voles by building little cages for your lily bulbs. Don’t miss this sale!

Guest speaker: Dr. David C. Zlesak

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have re-blooming lilies in our gardens? Did you know that there is research going on at the U of M with just that in mind? Dr. David Zlesak studied the inheritance of this trait for his Ph.D. research within the Flower Breeding and Genetics Laboratory of Dr. Neil Anderson. David will come and share his findings with us on this flowering trait in lilies and its practical application to lily lovers.  When he was contacted about speaking, his L. formosanum were in bloom in late August! David's presentation also highlight some of his tissue culture work and will show us some of his lilies from the lab.

Dr. David C. Zlesak is an Assistant Professor of Horticulture at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls where he teaches courses including plant propagation, plant tissue culture, nursery management, and woody plant identification.  David’s research has primarily focused on the breeding and development of new plant cultivars. Along with his work with lilies, he has been breeding roses since his youth (cultivars include: HoneybeeTM, ‘Catherine Guelda’, ‘September Celebration.’David has also worked on the breeding and development of potatoes, ninebark (Little DevilTM), heliopsis (‘Tuscan Sun’), and ageratum (MonarchTM series).
